Mapion local search allows people to point at what they want more information on, in the real world, from their mobile phone. How is it done ? By combining satellite navigation and sensors to determine what someone is pointing at.

The company that designed the technology is GeoVector. Patrick Bray from GeoVector says that "the phone know where the user is via GPS, and know the direction the user is pointing to thanks to a heading sensor. It send this information to our servers, where the billboard location and information are stored." Brays colleague, Arron Judson adds "the building needs no special beacons, barcodes, or other identifying solutions, we just need to know the location. There are many databases of location being developed, such as Google Local, Yahoo! Maps, MSN MapPoint, Amazon A9."

I have lots (hundreds) of contacts in my Outlook calendar. I don't necessarily want all of these on my mobile phone. Currently phone providers don't provide such niceties as an easy mechanism to have seperate contact lists - one for business and one for personal that can be either easily swapped or accessed from the phone. To combat this, what I'd quite like is a midlet application that can sync' with designated contacts, exporting the VCard data to the phone that can be read by the Midlet which can then integrate with phone functionality such as SMS, making calls etc. I may want to extend this to add specific data, such as sales lifecycle or project lifecycle information or maybe even some form of contact hierarchy.

I can find nothing that exists to solve what I consider to be a problem that seems to be treated by almost everyone with a phone as an idiosyncracy that has to be put up with......

So, I've started to build my own. Specifically it will:

Synch with VCARD contacts that are contained in a directory on the PC (these will be automatically exported from Outlook).
Store these contacts in a directory on the phone outside of the normal VCard contacts storage. These will be accessed and displayed by the midlet application.
Integrate with core phone functionality so that phone call or sms can be evoked from current contact.
Have the ability to make changes on the phone that will be synch'd back to the PC.

If anyone has any other thoughts then drop me a line.....
